The Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) is set  to make history once again as it announces her 3rd matriculation ceremony. Since its establishment, LASUSTECH has become synonymous with excellence in science, technology, and entrepreneurship education, and this upcoming event symbolizes another milestone in her journey.

The institution invites the public, parents, guardians, and well-wishers to witness this significant event, which officially welcomes a new cohort of students into its academic community.

Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), located in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria, has a rich history that reflects its evolution from a college to a recognized university. Established through the Lagos State Edict No. 1 of 1978, with a retroactive effect from June 1, 1977, the institution initially commenced classes in January 1978 under the name Lagos State College of Science and Technology (LACOSTECH) at a temporary site, now known as the Isolo Campus. The college originally offered five departments: Accountancy, Business Administration, Banking and Finance, Marketing, and Insurance. On August 1, 1978, the School of Agriculture in Ikorodu was integrated into the institution, establishing the foundation for its permanent campus.

In 1986, LACOSTECH was renamed Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), reflecting its expanded role in providing technical education. After decades of development and growth, LASPOTECH was officially transformed into Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) on February 2, 2022, following the signing of a bill by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The National Universities Commission (NUC) subsequently presented LASUSTECH with a certificate authorizing it to offer 38 academic programs across five college

Speaking on LASUSTECH’s accomplishments since its establishment, The Director of Information & Public Relations, Mr Olanrewaju Kuye ,states that  the  aim of any university is research, teaching, and community service,”I must tell you, we are doing well in those three areas. Despite being a new university, we have collaborations with universities in Ghana and Britain, and many of our lecturers are securing research grants. The community around us also benefits regularly from our services.” He said.

On the challenges faced, he explained, “Funding is a major challenge for most Nigerian tertiary institutions, but the State Government has been very supportive.”

The 3rd matriculation ceremony is set to be a grand occasion filled with excitement and pride. According to Mr. Olufemi Adebanjo, the  Deputy Registrar of Senate Affairs, the university has put in place strategies to ensure the matriculation ceremony is a success. “We’ve always had successful matriculation sessions, and every year we improve on what we did last year,” he said. The university has made arrangements to improve the venue, distribution of gowns, and registration process.

Mr. Adebanjo offered words of advice to the incoming students, “Matriculation is a signaling ceremony to show you that you are now a bonafide student of the university. This is a university of excellence. We are just starting, and we want to start with excellence so that the excellence will be a continuous thing. Avoid bad company, drugs, and ensure you make the most of your lectures.”

The school has once again proven its commitment to excellence with the successful completion of its accreditation exercise. This achievement highlights the institution’s dedication to providing high-quality education, fostering innovation, and producing globally competitive graduates.

The accreditation exercise, conducted by relevant regulatory bodies, was a rigorous assessment of the university’s academic programs, infrastructure, faculty strength, and overall operational standards. LASUSTECH not only met but exceeded the requirements, receiving commendations for its state-of-the-art facilities, cutting-edge research, and student-centered approach.

The public is encouraged to participate in this joyous occasion, which will take place on Wednesday 26th of February, 2025 at the Ikorodu campus.

This upcoming event is not just about welcoming the new students, it’s to highlight LASUSTECH’s commitment to academic excellence and its contribution to the development of Lagos State and Nigeria at large and also to showcase the values and vision that make LASUSTECH a trailblazer in education and development.

The public is invited to join in this momentous occasion as LASUSTECH reaffirms its commitment to excellence.
